Following the launch of the Axel Arigato Rush Sneaker in 2023, the term rush hour just took on a whole new meaning.
Well, at least for us, it has. 👟🤍
Instead of being stuck in traffic and honking hooters, we prefer to think of it as the moment we slip on our chunky Axel Arigato sneakers, walking with a new spring in our step and gaining the confidence to take on whatever lies ahead.
But the Axel Arigato Rush sneaker isn’t just about moving with haste and urgency (although you’ll likely rush to the cult-favorite brand’s online store after reading this review.) While designed to facilitate a fast-paced urban lifestyle, the light-footed fashion label is all about combatting sweatshops with slow fashion and carefully considered sustainable essentials.
Renowned for designing some of the best white sneakers for men and women, Axel Arigato is known for its clean kicks and classy craftsmanship. Marrying Japanese detailing with Scandi simplicity, the brand’s minimalist sneakers hit the elusive sweet spot between bold and basic.
In this review, we’ll explore exactly how the chunky-soled Rush Sneaker achieves this, making it one of the most popular sneakers amongst die-hard sneakerheads and street-style sartorialists alike.
The Axel Arigato Rush is available for both men and women.

Axel Arigato Rush Review: Kicking minimalist sneakers into high gear
With their weekly drops, cultural events, and commitment to crafting on-trend sneakers with exceptional quality, we’re believers in Axel Arigato.
We’ve written about other sneakers from their collection before (see the Area Lo review) and we’ve also covered the story behind the Axel Arigato company. With this latest release, we’re standing firm on their status as a need-to-know brand.
But how is the Rush stacking up to the brand’s previous offerings? Let’s dive into our full review of these kicks to find out.
Unboxing: You had me at Yellow Box
Unboxing Axel Arigato shoes is always a momentous occasion, akin to how a child might feel on Christmas. And even though we’ve come to know what to expect by now (or perhaps, because of that), the arrival of our Axel Arigato Rush sneakers was somehow even more exciting.
The sneakers arrive in a FSC Certified box in the brand’s signature shade of yellow, a testament to its commitment to environmentally friendly practices. They are covered by some branded paper we simply need to lift to unveil the shoes.
The Axel Arigato Rush also came with a recycled polyester dust bag, featuring the brand’s iconic logo. We especially appreciate this when storing or packing them into a suitcase on top of other items.
Aesthetic & design: A bold statement
The Axel Arigato Rush sneaker is a captivating blend of avant-garde Japanese fashion with Scandinavian minimalism (we call it Japandi) and unparalleled comfort. Subtly recalling the brand’s popular Genesis sneaker, these low-top sneakers feature round toes, lace fastenings, and padded ankle collars, ensuring a snug and secure fit.
The design is notably more robust and beefed up than many of the brand’s more minimalist models, like the Clean 90 (a favorite of ours; check my in-depth review here).
The Rush Sneaker is instantly recognized by its 3cm chunky, ridged sole. Elevated in both style and stature, the sole is amped up and tapered with ample foot cushioning and premium shock absorption.
With a nod to vintage athletics and retro running designs, these sneakers incorporate breathable mesh overlays, lending a dynamic shape accentuated with bold pops of color. The iconic Bee Bird is tastefully embroidered on the sidewall, adding a signature touch of playful whimsy and exclusivity.
Materials & craftsmanship: Premium quality and sustainable craftsmanship
The fusion of two fashion frontiers (Japan and Scandinavia) that are meticulous in their artisanal techniques, Axel Arigato pursues nothing short of perfection in its clean-cut craftsmanship. This level of care and attention is unmistakable in the Axel Arigato Rush sneaker.
Handmade in Portugal, every stitch is impeccable, and every detail is perfectly placed.
Like many Axel Arigato sneakers, the Rush prioritizes both style and sustainability. The avant-garde model is crafted from innovative, eco-friendly materials, such as LWG-certified leather and recycled PES, made from used plastic bottles. The sole is also partially constructed from recycled rubber, further underscoring the brand’s dedication to preserving the planet.
Additionally, Axel Arigato uses durable canvas, reinforced with leather and suede trims. This not only adds to the urbanity of the sneaker but also ensures longevity and resilience. We’ve walked miles in ours already, and they don’t show signs of tiring any time soon.
Comfort and fit: Light top with grounded sole
While the Axel Arigato Rush sneaker excels in just about everything, we did find that it leans slightly on the heavy side. Wearing the shoes daily, we didn’t find this to be problematic as the weight is offset by the inclusion of extra cushioning, excellent support, and a snug fit.
So even though they’re heavier than many other sneakers, your ankle doesn’t slide and they don’t feel like they’re weighing down.
That being said, the extra weight is not ideal for travel, but we consider that a small price that we’re willing to pay for the street style comfort that the chunky soles provide.
Variants: Colors for every day of the week
Recognized by its old-school sporty aesthetic and angular silhouette, the Rush Sneaker comes in an array of options to suit both men and women. While many of the designs are considered genderless, the range of men’s Rush sneakers and women’s Rush sneakers do differ slightly. The men’s line has darker neutral hues, such as blacks, navys and greens. And the women’s line has more pops of color and lighter pastels.
Both collections work with white as the primary base color. And both collections include options featuring the brand’s signature embroidered bee-eater—a personal favorite.
Price: Premium but fair
Axel Arigato offers couture craftsmanship at much more accessible price points than typical designer labels. The Rush Sneaker ranges between $200 and $345, depending on the color and detailing, with the embroidered bee-eater renditions being at the top end of this range.
As luxury enthusiasts who prefer to buy fewer, better quality products, we think it’s totally worth it for the amount of work that goes into them and considering the low cost per wear.
Care & maintenance
One of the (many) reasons that we like the Rush sneaker so much is that it’s very long-lasting. However, no matter how great the materials are or how meticulous the stitching is, there are always ways to add years to your shoes.
Pro tip: Get an Axel Arigato cleaning kit. It comes with a water-based shoe cleaning gel that effectively removes dirt, while protecting the leather and suede materials. It also includes a gentle microfiber cloth and double-sided beachwood brush, fitted with soft bristles for delicate materials and stiff bristle for midsoles and seams.
Who it is best for? Style icons and style-lovers alike
A favorite amongst it-girls and street style icons—Bella Hadid, Ryan Reynolds, Justin Beiber, and Margot Robbie included—Axel Arigato caters to fashion-forward minimalists who appreciate an edgy touch, superior comfort and meticulous craftsmanship.
Pair them with biker shorts (Hailey Bieber style) or dress them up with your favorite LBD. Either way, compliments are guaranteed.
In conclusion: My thoughts on the Axel Arigato Rush sneakers
Verdict:
When looking for a new pair of sneakers, we’re usually torn between making a statement and keeping it simple. The Rush Sneaker diminishes that dichotomy with the uncanny ability to be both subtle and striking.
While the chunky sole and embroidery detailing make it an attention-grabbing accessory, the clean lines and subtle tones speak to the shoe’s versatility and wearability. For us, it’s an easy choice if you want a comfortable, chunky sneaker with a fashion-forward edge.
What I like:
- Comfortable right out of the box
- Chunky sole provides extra height and ample cushioning
- Design is versatile yet statement-making
- Handmade in Portugal from sustainable, recycled materials
- A snug fit means that they secure your foot and stay in place
What I don’t like:
- On the slightly heavier side
- Design is too busy for dedicated minimalists
Alternatives to Axel Arigato Rush Sneaker
Koio Volterra
The Koio Volterra is a compelling alternative to the Rush Sneaker. Both models flaunt a chunky cushioned sole, suede accents, and an angular silhouette. The Koio Volterra has slightly more suede and only comes in white, gray and macadamia, while the Rush has a lot more color options available. If you’re looking for a more sophisticated suede sneaker, you’ll likely love the Koio Volterra. However, it doesn’t possess quite the same edginess as the Rush.
Priced at $298, the Koio sneaker is slightly more expensive than the basic Rush design, although it is still considered affordable for the quality. The line includes women’s Volterras and men’s Volterras.
M.Gemi The Storia
The M.Gemi Storia is another chunky-soled sneaker that caught our attention. It also has leather, suede and mesh accents, although it isn’t as clean as the Rush. Featuring neon and metallic accents, the M.Gemi sneaker is considered more playful and upbeat. The men’s Storia comes in navys, grays and browns. While the women’s Storia comes in silvers, whites and beiges.
Priced at $298, the M.Gemi Storia is slightly more expensive than the Rush, but it’s equally well made with quality materials.
Where to buy Axel Arigato Rush Sneaker?
Since launching as a direct-to-consumer online store, the affordable luxury label has opened brick-and-mortar stores around Europe and Dubai. Known for their contemporary decor and exclusive events, the stores are definitely worth a visit if you’re in town.
However, the official Axel Arigato website is equally exciting. No middleman costs and unnecessary expenses. Just high-quality designer sneakers sold at much lower price points. The brand also offers free (and expedient) delivery and returns.
